Formentera: the island of Espalmador

Formentera. Espalmador is the stuff of dreams; a little uninhabited island just a few meters offshore at the most northern point of Formentera with pure white beaches and fabulously clear waters.

Espalmador is the stuff of dreams; a little uninhabited island just a few meters offshore at the most northern point of Formentera with pure white beaches and fabulously clear waters. There are no buildings on this island and it is visited in the main by luxury yachts’ owners on a day trip from Ibiza.

You can see this paradise from Playa de Illetes but although it looks close enough to touch, the strong currents operating here prevent you trying to swim to it. It therefore remains exclusively for those who can reach it by boat – and with the little ferry from the port of La Savina it’s possible to do it without having a posh yacht!

The ferries go in summer between 10.15 – 11.45 and 13.15 h to Espalmador with a stop in Illetes. Return is at 16.15 – 17.30 h and 18.45 h. However do check the timings out as they are subject to change.

If you’re staying on Ibiza the following two boat trips give you a chance to see this untouched island; the Formentera Explorer from Playa d’en Bossa which stops at Espalmador before continuing on to Ses Illetes and the port La Savina, or the Aquabus excursion boat which leaves from Figueretas and Playa d’en Bossa – the perfect way to spend a wonderful day on this unspoiled island!

Right in the middle of this tranquil island are natural mud flats that are easy to find. Head along the far north end of Platja de s’Alga (s’Alga beach) and follow the narrow pathway through the scrubland that backs the beach. Finally you will emerge at a wide salt plain that has liquid mud at its centre. This area is an absolute haven for birds and is specially protected by strict environmental laws. It’s a dream for ornithologists, but please take note ladies and gents, mud-bathing is not permitted.

This really is a wonderful place to swim, sunbathe and discover some of the beautiful Balearic flora and fauna in a completely unspoilt environment. Don’t forget to take sun cream, food and drink as there is nothing here but the pure, unadulterated beauty of nature.
