Benirrás beach
Puerto de San Miguel, Ibiza. Famous for its spectacular sunsets and hippie drumming Sundays, Benirrás is a key beach in the north of the island.

Getting there: Reached by car, follow signposts from San Miguel. There are 2 car parks (free of charge) with a capacity of 400 cars. From the first weekend in June till the first weekend in October (both included), the road to Benirrás will be closed each Sunday in the time from 15:30 to 21:00, because of the many people which descend to the beach to see the drumming (see below). Normally there is a special bus service on these Sundays, which connects to the beach each 15 minutes, from the Sa Plana car park near Can Coroner (Google maps), which is ca. 6 km from Benirrás – but it is not confirmed yet if this bus service will happen in summer 2020. A beautiful approach, meandering down through hills and valleys, brings you to the beach of Benirrás. It is a pretty beach of partly pebbly sand with rocks either side that you can clamber over and a picturesque view across the water to an interesting rock formation known as Cap Bernat (or referred to locals as ‘the finger of God’). The sea bed is rocky which makes it excellent for snorkellers but not so easy to walk into… but that’s all part of the fun! The water is crystal clear.
This sheltered bay is a popular anchoring spot for private yachts and motor boats which gather in the late afternoon to enjoy the romantic sundown, in summer accompanied on Sundays by drummers who descend to the beach to ‘drum down the sunset‘ in this iconic hippie ritual. This drumming is a unique Ibiza experience, established over many years.
However, the popularity of the event means an absolutely packed beach on Sundays. Parking will be difficult (see above), so we recommend you come early and spend the whole day at the beach; or come by bus. Because it is so popular on Sundays, some drumming now also takes place on most other evenings in summer, starting only 15 to 20 minutes before sunset – not the big drumming experience as on Sundays but also very nice and less busy.
In summer there is also a lovely small hippie market happening several days a week, with stands selling fashion, accessories, craftwork and more (see event).
